The last cans of Oskar's Surströmming ever
The family business Oskar's Surströmming is forced to close down after 67 years, they have been operating in Sweden since 1955.
Oskar Söderström started the salting plant, which is now run by his son Jan Söderström. For several years, reports of a shortage of herring have been frequent, as have the problems for the herring producers. Oskar's could, for this season, only produce a tenth of the company's normal level. The business is being forced to close down - due to the shortage of herring.
Industrial fishing destroys
Oskar's owner, Jan Söderström, explains the lack of herring by the large-scale industrial fishing, causing significant problems for local producers along the coast. For that reason, Oskars is now closing down its business.
